What did Leo have in the truck? He went out two weeks ago and here he was, going out again.

I hurried downstairs. Mother would have said I was sneaking, and perhaps I was. It’d been so long now since I thought of Mother, or Freya. Guilt made me swallowed hard and I hurried across the big room. It was no longer frightening, but I wanted to avoid notice.

Leo was in the back courtyard. With any luck I could go out the front way and avoid notice. This way I avoided seeing him, and Frau Bergedorf’s afternoon visit. She liked sitting in the sunny nursery nearly every day. And it made me feel guilty, knowing what I planned.

But today I’d avoid that. A walk while the weather was clear; what could be a more innocent reason to miss it? I bundled Claudia into the carriage and pulled it into the side hall. Then I held my breath. If Leo happened by at the wrong moment…but there was no sound of anyone close. I pulled open the heavy door that opened out to the front of the property. It felt twice as heavy, though it appeared to be the same. Perhaps it was less used—that must be it.

Out we went, but then I stopped. The path to town was out the back door and even if I circled around, I’d run into Leo. I looked in every direction. There had to be another path…and there it was.

I let out a sigh of relief and hurried towards it.

These woods were less civilized than the path to town. Less touched by wagons and automobiles, but I couldn’t call it dreadfully wild.

Claudia settled for her nap; she loved being outside. There was no easy way to let her sleep out every day, except for the walks. But that meant I never got a rest.

Soon the path lead past houses and garden plots covered with snow. Past pens with a few shivering chickens trying to dig down to the dirt. An older woman came out of a small house, her hair tied back tight and a basket on her hip. She saw me and stopped, staring, then she went back inside.

I kept going. The road was rough, but not enough to be distracting. What was I going to do? I had to get away, but where could I go? Freya was old enough; she’d be alright without me.

“What are you doing here?” The woman stood a few feet ahead, at the edge of the low fence that bordered the street. “You’re not from around here.”

I shook my head. “I’m the nanny. I’m getting her some fresh air.”

She came a step closer. “You’re not even German?”

A flood of worry filled me, but it was no use lying, she’d already heard my accent. “No. But Frau Bergedorf said that—”

“Bergedorf?” She peeked in the carriage then straightened up again. “That’s the niece of the Graff?”

“Herr Bergedorf is her uncle.”

She came closer, leaning in and peering at Claudia.

If I didn’t keep moving, she’d wake up.
